Video games are appreciated by young and old. However, the Internet, magazines, and most are full of untruths about games. The world is filled with things like “Thursday led to violence; ruins of sight Thursday, youth who are involved with video games become school drop outs or fall into bad company,” and more.
As parents, teachers and adults we need to separate the truths of lies and make decisions about video game based on research and facts. Here are some points to consider:
1. Many are convinced that video and computer games encourage violence in children. The truth is that today, 90 percent of the male population and 40 per cent of the female population video or computer games and according to statistics from the federal juvenile crime is very low and not increasing. Criminals are rarely created by the game, most often it is a number of factors such as family breakdown, poverty, drugs, and more.
2. A popular belief is that video games increases aggression among children. Many studies are based on samples in the field close and does not represent a fair sampling. Threshing media fosters the conclusion by studies that have poor methodology or analysis. The violence is everywhere around us in the media, in movies, and more. The worst is that the aggression shown by road rage. If violence in games exists, it is not a major factor that leads to aggressive behaviour. Children must be exposed to a holistic lifestyle and have good values embedded in them at home and school. The research in no way established a direct link between gambling and violence that many involved in school shootings were the players.
3. The video and computer games are made for children. Although this May have been a few years ago, today the players around the age of 6-80 years. The game is a passion with young and old, and technological advances have created a following among adults. The games are rated so that parents can make informed choices when purchasing games.
4. Games wasting time and have no positive effects. That is a lie and studies of child development and other experts have found that games heal, improve hand-eye coordination, be able to refine reflection, teach kids to make quick decisions, and enhance creativity. Gaming according to several experts benefits children in many ways and even instills motivation and self-confidence.
5. The video and computer games are exclusively for boys and men. While there is some truth in that, today the female is “shoulder to shoulder” with men in all spheres of activity. Statistics show that today more women play games on the Web than men and there are many women involved in the design and production of games.
6. Games teach kids to kill. While the military uses games to train soldiers there is no logical conclusion that every child who plays video or computer games become a soldier. The soldiers have a different profile and is the military training which makes them not only soldiers games. In fact James Gee in his book “What video games to teach us about learning and literacy” establishes the “potential for learning” games, games teach skills for solving problems in the players and teaches players to be members of the team.
7. The games are a waste of time is a great conviction. In fact, the experts proved that games can be positive if handled properly. Children and adults should limit their gambling activities and engage in other hobbies. Games search function allows players to role play and take important decisions of nation-building. Players can experience first hand what decisions accordingly, in accordance to what makes research examine the consequences of their acts before they make not only a game but I am in real life.
8. Video games make lonely. The video and computer games are not isolated. In fact, most players play as a team with people living in the world. The Internet has opened many doors today and the players to learn from each other, interact with many of those who are not even their own culture or age. Games knows no barriers and created an open world.
